IACP Police Chiefs Desk Reference
IACP has made available a desk reference for newly appointed police chiefs. The document is a major component of the IACP New Police Chief Mentoring Project, which is part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance-funded IACP Services, Support, and Technical Assistance for Smaller Police Departments Program.
This document contains 17 chapters in 350 pages. Chapters are included on leadership, ethics, grant resources, and policy-and-procedure manuals. Also included are sample internal and community surveys as well as best practices guides on a wide range of topics. It also contains information about state associations of chiefs of police and many other resource listings, summaries, and Web site referrals.
The desk reference was designed to allow chiefs to insert additional resource information as it is developed. In the next year, the state associations will be working with the project to create state-specific chapters featuring information about state association membership, state contacts, legal and procedural issues, training requirements and opportunities, funding sources, and other resources. These chapters will be housed on the participating state associations’ Web sites as well as the IACP New Police Chief Mentoring Project Web site. Visit www.theiacp.org/research/RCDChiefMentoring.html for the latest updates and to view or request a copy of the IACP Police Chiefs Desk Reference. For more information, call Kristine Saltarelli, project coordinator, at 800-THE-IACP, extension 338, or write to her at mentoring@theiacp.org.
