California Police Department Chooses PDSI Scheduling Software
PDSI, a leading provider of staff scheduling and notification solutions for public safety departments, announces that the San Jose Police Department has selected TeleStaff for its staff scheduling and notification needs. TeleStaff is designed to automate and manage department-wide staffing needs by combining user-friendly software with the telephone. Additional features include detailed time tracking, cost reporting, and the direct export of valuable staffing data into third-party payroll, CAD, and RMS solutions. TeleStaff is engineered to improve staff scheduling efficiencies and communications and reduce operating costs for public safety departments.

"The department selected TeleStaff to accomplish three goals," said Sergeant Douglas Grant, of the San Jose Police Department's Research and Development Unit. "We wanted to replace our current, in-house program, which has become increasingly challenging to support and upgrade, standardize our timesheet system by integrating TeleStaff into our PeopleSoft payroll solution, and lastly, but most importantly, reduce the overall time and resources it takes to schedule staff to training, time off, vacation and overtime."

TeleStaff manages a personal calendar for each employee that may be accessed by PC, by telephone, or through the Web via WebStaff, an add-on product in the TeleStaff family, enabling staff to access appropriate information and administrators to execute staffing decisions from any Internet-enabled Web browser. Officers or other employees, for example, may sign up for work, review exceptions to their schedules, and make leave requests. TeleStaff is configured using a department's staffing rules as well as union recommendations to ensure fair and accurate scheduling practices.

Virginia County Partners with CTA Communications
CTA Communications Inc. announces that its client, Roanoke County, Virginia, has a fully executed planning funding agreement approved by the Federal Communications Commission's Transition Administrator (TA) for rebanding frequencies in its 800-megahertz trunked radio system. Roanoke County operates a joint public safety radio system with the Roanoke City, and the two have cooperative intercommunications agreements with surrounding jurisdictions and with the state.

The Sprint Nextel funds will be used to finalize plans for the relocation of Roanoke County's frequencies in its four-site, 23channel, trunked, simulcast system located within the lower 120 channels of the band.
CTA is also helping Roanoke County prepare a frequency relocation agreement for their frequencies in the lower 120 channels and a request for planning funding agreement for relocating their expansion band channels and NPSPAC channels on its system.

Miami-Dade Police Receive Behavior Pattern Recognition Training
New Age Security Solutions (NASS) announces that it has completed Behavior Pattern Recognition training for a selected group of Miami-Dade Police Department officers assigned to the Miami International Airport police district. The training is designed to teach the officers how to identify threats, methods of attacks, and terrorists by looking for unusual or out-of-the-ordinary behaviors.

"Our officers now have an additional tool while conducting their proactive policing and can deploy tactically to contain or neutralize a situation." says Major Ruben Galindo, the district commander. Officers assigned to the newly established Incident Containment Team at Miami International Airport are specially trained to identify threats, potential attacks, or terrorists and handle incidents immediately.

"Behavior Pattern Recognition training focuses on the observation of people and suspicious behavior, including what visitors are wearing, bags they're carrying, and mannerisms that don't fit the environment," said Samuel Juchtman, training director for New Age Security Solutions.

California Police and National Bike Registry Join Forces to Recover Stolen Bicycles
The National Bike Registry announces that it gave police in two California jurisdictions the necessary information to return recovered stolen bikes to their owners.

In Orinda, California, a police officer found a misplaced Giant Iguana bike with an NBR tamper-resistant label. The department called NBR to locate the registered owner, who lives in nearby Lafayette. When NBR representatives contacted the owner, he didn't even realize the bike had been lost.

"I had other bikes stolen in Lafayette before," David Sullivan, the owner, told NBR. "It is quite impressive that you got my bike even before I knew it was missing."

Haleh Williams-Cain, senior administrative assistant officer for the Orinda Police Department, said, "NBR's service was very helpful in matching a lost bike with its rightful owner."

In Pleasanton, California, a stolen Giant BMX bike that had been missing for months was recently recovered. The NBR label led Pleasanton police to the National Bike Registry, which notified the owner, Gary Williamson of Pleasanton.

NBR makes its database of registered bike owners available to police departments in the United States to help them quickly and easily match found bikes with the rightful owners, no matter where they were stolen and recovered. Participating police departments also receive an NBR Official Bike Registration Station window decal, bike registration forms, posters, public relations support, bike safety materials, and other information to register bikes in their community. ■
