Tech Talk: Improving Public Safety Through Technology

The Role of Sensors, Dashboards, and Data

The growth of technology in public safety is transforming how many agencies serve their communities. Three key factors are coming together to shape the future of policing: (1) the wide use of sensors throughout cities and neighborhoods, (2) the integration of real-time crime centers (RTCCs), and (3) the resulting influx of large amounts of data. These elements are helping agencies improve outcomes while using fewer resources and enhancing both officer and community safety.

The Growing Use of Sensors

Sensors are now a regular part of public safety operations. The use of tools like automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, live pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) CCTV cameras, drones, and audio sensors for detecting gunshots continues to grow rapidly. These tools provide a steady flow of information that improve situational awareness. For instance, drones in “drone as a first responder” programs give live aerial views of incidents, helping officers assess situations before they arrive. Similarly, gunshot detection systems pinpoint where shots are fired, cutting response times significantly.
