
As professional policing across the globe encounters quickly emerging advanced technologies, the landscape of digital evidence is set to undergo significant transformations. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is exponential growth in new devices that are being connected and collecting information. On the policing side, these innovations promise to enhance the collection, analysis, and reliability of digital evidence, but they also introduce new potential challenges and risks. This is significant given that many police and criminal justice organizations already find themselves either without the needed staff to address digital evidence, or they are already working hard to cope with the volume and complexity of the existing digital evidence landscape. While the future cannot be fully predicted, examining some of the potential positive and negative impacts related to several key emerging technologies can better prepare agencies. Leaders should consider their agency’s awareness and capacity to address these advanced technologies as they become operationalized and hit the market.
