Cargo theft, especially as conducted by transnational criminal organizations, is becoming a more pressing issue for transportation professionals, police agencies, consumers, and policymakers worldwide. This growing concern was underscored earlier this year when transportation and security professionals (including the author of this article) were called to Washington, DC, to testify before the U.S. Senate Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety Subcommittee. The discourse during this important hearing can be distilled in five key takeaways for police leaders, presented herein, along with an outline of eight significant efforts needed to combat cargo theft more effectively going forward.
