Traffic Safety Initiatives: Reimagining Minor Crash Response

While there are law enforcement agencies that are fully staffed, many do not have the resources necessary for timely response to every call for service. When considering how leadership could improve operations with existing staffing levels, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) thought about how their members on light duty could be utilized more effectively.

Historically, the agency has 10 or more members at any given time who are unable to perform traditional law enforcement duties due to a medical restriction. Finding a way for these members to provide law enforcement services while on light duty (instead of performing clerical tasks) would provide some support to the troopers working the road in high crash volume areas. This would also provide better service for residents and visitors.
