A common question heard in substance-impaired driving classes is, “Why do we do it this way?” Too often, the answer is simply, “Because that’s how we’ve always done it” or “That’s what the manual says.”

Another equally common question is, “What does that have to do with driving?” Understanding the answers to those questions is critical for officers who want to move beyond rote performance and toward true mastery of impairment detection.
