My fiancée was banging on the door of my condo. I had just come off a 12-hour overnight shift and was deep asleep. When I finally woke up and turned on the television, there was only smoke, confusion, and the unmistakable realization that tragedy was unfolding and answers were limited. Like so many others in law enforcement that morning, my instinct to jump into the fray and offer help was immediate. I wanted to self-deploy and even contemplated joining the military. I wanted to get to New York and find a way to contribute.
