A career in policing is unlike most professions. Officers are routinely exposed to physical demands, operational stress, irregular schedules, and critical incidents that can affect health, performance, and overall well-being.

Supporting officers throughout their careers requires more than tactical and operational training. It also requires practical tools that promote wellness, professional growth, resilience, and preparedness for life after policing.

Research continues to highlight the importance of career-long wellness for officers. Physical health, sleep, nutrition, professional support networks, and retirement preparation all contribute to an officer’s effectiveness, career longevity, and quality of life; yet these topics are often overlooked amid competing operational priorities.1

To help address these challenges, the International Association of Chiefs of Police has launched four new micro-courses as part of the Elevate Blue virtual training suite: Nutrition for Performance, Rested and Ready: Practical Sleep Solutions, Mentorship to Move Your Career Forward, and Planning Your Retirement Transition. Each course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, making the content accessible and easy to incorporate into busy schedules. Together, these courses provide practical strategies and actionable guidance to support officers at every stage of their careers, from those just entering the profession to those preparing for retirement. Each course also includes a downloadable action-planning tool that helps learners translate key concepts into practical next steps that they can apply in their personal and professional lives.

Elevate Blue Micro-Courses

Nutrition for Performance

Long shifts, unpredictable schedules, overnight work, and limited food options can make healthy eating difficult in policing. Nutrition, however, directly affects energy levels, focus, recovery, sleep quality, resilience, and overall job performance.

The Nutrition for Performance course helps learners understand the connection between nutrition and operational readiness while providing realistic strategies that can be implemented within the realities of law enforcement work. Participants explore nutrient-dense food choices, hydration practices, caffeine management, meal planning, and methods for overcoming common nutrition challenges associated with shift work.

Rested and Ready: Practical Sleep Solutions

Sleep is one of the most important foundations of officer wellness, yet it is often compromised by operational demands, shift work, family responsibilities, and stress associated with policing.

The Rested and Ready: Practical Sleep Solutions course examines the role sleep plays in decision-making, emotional regulation, physical recovery, stress management, and long-term health. Learners identify the unique challenges officers face in maintaining restorative sleep and develop practical approaches to improve recovery despite demanding schedules.

Mentorship to Move Your Career Forward

Few successful policing careers are built alone. Mentorship can provide guidance, support, perspective, and professional development opportunities throughout an officer’s career.

The Mentorship to Move Your Career Forward course explores how mentoring relationships contribute to professional growth, leadership development, career advancement, and increased confidence. Learners examine the qualities of effective mentors, methods for identifying mentors aligned with professional goals, and strategies for maintaining productive mentoring relationships.

Planning Your Retirement Transition

Retirement represents one of the most significant transitions in a policing career. While financial preparation often receives considerable attention, many officers are less prepared for the emotional, psychological, and lifestyle changes that accompany leaving the profession.

The Planning Your Retirement Transition course focuses on helping officers prepare for life beyond policing. Participants learn how retirement may affect identity, daily structure, relationships, and purpose while developing strategies to maintain well-being and fulfillment during the transition.

Supporting Career Longevity Through Accessible Training

Training plays a critical role in helping officers build the knowledge, skills, and habits that contribute to success throughout their careers. Nutrition, sleep, mentorship, and retirement preparation are interconnected components of officer wellness that strengthen resilience, professional growth, operational effectiveness, and career sustainability.

For many agencies, particularly those with limited staffing or resources, access to quality training can be challenging. Elevate Blue helps reduce these barriers by offering flexible, self-paced learning that allows personnel to complete training without extended time away from operational responsibilities.

To help agencies move training from individual learning to organizational practice, the IACP has developed the Elevate Blue Integration Guide. This resource provides practical guidance for incorporating Elevate Blue courses into academy, in-service, and refresher training programs. The guide assists agency leaders and training coordinators in identifying training needs, assigning responsibilities, communicating expectations, monitoring completion, and gathering feedback. By supporting structured implementation, the guide helps agencies maximize the impact of training and align professional development efforts with organizational goals.

These new wellness-focused micro-courses complement the broader Elevate Blue training portfolio and reflect a commitment to supporting officers throughout every stage of their careers. From establishing healthy habits and improving recovery to fostering professional growth and preparing for retirement, the courses provide practical tools that help officers thrive both during and after their years of service.

In addition to these new offerings, the Elevate Blue suite includes courses such as Leadership, Management, and Supervision; Managing Mass Demonstrations and Preserving Civil Liberties; Resilience Across Dimensions; Effective Violent Crime Reduction Strategies; Recruitment, Hiring, Training & Retention and Tactical & Ethical Decision-Making. d
