Traffic Safety Initiatives: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Automotive technology has advanced rapidly in the last decade. While the quest for self-driving vehicles has garnered much publicity, a wide variety of vehicle technologies have quietly permeated all foreign and domestic brands.

Automated Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) are electronic features designed for increased safety, driver convenience, or both. Research indicates the systems are achieving significant safety outcomes. ADAS are increasingly impacting a variety of law enforcement functions and police officers will benefit by educating themselves on how the various technologies work and how they affect vehicle dynamics. In addition, vehicle manufacturers are now offering ADAS options in their police fleets for their potential to reduce both the number and severity of crashes and vehicles’ inherent repair costs while enhancing officer safety.
