Government Shutdown Impact on Policing Priorities
The ongoing federal government shutdown is having a significant impact on the legislative process, delaying action on many issues impacting the policing profession. With Congress focused on resolving the budget dispute, bills related to officer wellness, unmanned aerial systems, FirstNet reauthorization, firearms, and many other critical criminal justice issues remain stalled.
Impact on Federal Law Enforcement and Workforce
- Approximately 750,000 federal employees are being furloughed daily.
- Essential personnel, including federal law enforcement officers, are required to work without pay until funding is restored.
- Agencies like the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Marshals continue operations, but face resource constraints and delays in nonessential functions.
- Federal courts are postponing nonemergency matters, affecting investigations and prosecutions.
These disruptions affect interagency coordination, investigations, and the broader criminal justice system.
The shutdown also limits the ability of Congress to hold hearings, advance legislation, and engage with stakeholders—including law enforcement leaders—on emerging public safety challenges.
The IACP will continue to monitor the situation closely and will continue to advocate for issues vital to the policing profession.
Nominee Developments
- Sara Carter, nominee for Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 9. The Committee voted 12–10 to favorably report her nomination, which has been placed on the Senate Executive Calendar for full Senate consideration.
Please note – because of the IACP Annual Conference – the next edition of the Legislative Update will be published on Friday, November 7.
IACP remains committed to ensuring the voice of the policing profession is heard at the highest levels of government. IACP’s advocacy is grounded in the needs of those serving on the front lines.
