As it has across the United States, the landscape of impaired driving enforcement in Alabama has shifted dramatically over the past decade.

While alcohol and prescription drugs continue to pose substantial challenges statewide, two substances—methamphetamine and fentanyl—
have emerged as dominant contributors to drug-impaired driving cases. Alone or in combination, these substances present unique challenges for law enforcement, forensic toxicologists, policymakers, and judicial systems.
